Trusted Traveler Programs (Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, NEXUS, SENTRI) require periodic renewal. All programs are managed through the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) portal at ttp.dhs.gov.
19 steps across 6 sections
1. Global Entry
- Many renewals are approved without an in-person interview — CBP may re-approve based on your application and records
- If an interview is required, you will be notified via your TTP account and/or email
- You can complete the interview at an enrollment center (scheduled appointment) or via Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) when returning from an international trip
- EoA is often the most convenient option — complete the interview at the Global Entry kiosk upon arrival at a participating airport
2. TSA PreCheck
- Online renewals typically do not require an in-person visit
- In-person renewals at an enrollment center require identity verification
3. NEXUS
- NEXUS renewals require an interview at a designated NEXUS enrollment center (located at US-Canada border crossings and select airports)
- Both US and Canadian agencies must approve the renewal
- NEXUS enrollment centers have been experiencing longer wait times; plan ahead
4. Global Entry
- Includes TSA PreCheck benefits (domestic expedited screening)
- Renewal maintains your Known Traveler Number (KTN)
- If renewal is denied, you lose both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck benefits
5. TSA PreCheck
- Standalone domestic program — no customs/border benefits
- Members can renew online in about 5 minutes
- New membership period begins when current one ends (no penalty for early renewal)
6. NEXUS
- Joint US-Canada program (includes Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and Canadian expedited entry)
- Free to renew (no fee)
- NEXUS card itself must be renewed/replaced if damaged or if photo needs updating
- Both CBP (US) and CBSA (Canada) must approve
Common Mistakes
- Waiting too long
- Not updating information
- Assuming no interview is needed
- Ignoring email notifications
- Letting NEXUS lapse
