Eligible adults can renew their passport by mail using Form DS-82, or through the State Department's Online Passport Renewal System. This is simpler and cheaper than a first-time application since no in-person appearance is required.
25 steps across 5 sections
1. Eligibility For Mail Renewal (Ds-82)
- Your most recent passport is in your possession (can submit it with the application)
- It was issued when you were age 16 or older
- It was issued within the last 15 years
- It was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order)
2. Online Renewal Option
- Must be eligible for DS-82 renewal
- Must be applying for routine service (not expedited)
- Visit the State Department's Online Passport Renewal System
- Upload a digital passport photo
3. How To Renew By Mail
- Complete Form DS-82 - Fill out online and print, or download the PDF
- Gather documents:
- Your most recent passport book and/or card
- One recent passport photo (2x2 inches)
- Name change documentation (if applicable)
- Payment for fees
- Mail everything using a trackable delivery method (USPS only — do NOT use UPS, FedEx, or DHL as the mailing address is a PO Box)
- Wait for processing - Your new passport and old passport will arrive separately by mail
4. Fees (2026)
- No acceptance/execution fee for mail renewals (saves $35 vs. first-time)
- Expedited processing Add $60
- 1-2 day delivery Add $22.05
- Adding a passport card during book renewal: +$30
5. Important Notes
- Your old passport will be returned to you separately (usually canceled with holes punched)
- You can check application status online at travel.state.gov
- Do not make travel plans based on when you expect to receive your passport
- If your passport has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you CANNOT renew — you must apply as new with DS-11
- Passport books are valid for 10 years for adults
