1. Complete Form DS-160

  • Submit online at ceac.state.gov/genniv
  • Collects personal, travel, and background information

2. Pay the Application Fee

  • Pay the MRV fee ($185/$205) through the payment methods accepted by the specific embassy/consulate
  • Pay the $250 visa integrity fee if applicable
  • Save payment receipts

3. Schedule Your Interview

  • Book an interview at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate
  • Wait times vary significantly by location (weeks to months)
  • Interview waivers eliminated as of September 2025 for nearly all B-1/B-2 applicants
  • Apply 6+ months before travel to allow for processing time

4. Attend Your Interview

  • Bring to the interview:
  • Valid passport (valid for 6+ months beyond intended stay)
  • DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
  • Appointment confirmation letter
  • Fee payment receipt
  • Passport photo (if not uploaded digitally)
  • Supporting documents (recommended but not required):
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements, pay stubs, tax returns)
  • Evidence of ties to home country (employment letter, property ownership, family)
  • Travel itinerary / hotel reservations

5. Wait for Processing

  • Most applications processed within a few days to weeks
  • Some cases require administrative processing (additional weeks/months)
  • Passport returned via courier or pickup after decision
