The SAT and ACT are standardized college admissions tests accepted by virtually all US colleges and universities. The SAT (administered by the College Board) is now fully digital and focuses on reading, writing, and math.

10 steps across 1 sections

1. Steps Process

  • Decide which test to take. Take a practice version of both the SAT and ACT to determine which format suits you better:
  • SAT: Digital, adaptive format; emphasis on reading comprehension and data analysis; no science section; calculator allowed on all math
  • ACT: Paper or digital (depending on state); includes a Science section; more time pressure; optional Writing section
  • Create an account and register.
  • SAT: Register at collegeboard.org. Fee: $68 (US)
  • ACT: Register at act.org. Fee: approximately $68 (without Writing), $93 (with Writing)
  • Upload a photo (required for admission to the testing center)
  • Select a test date and testing center
  • Plan your testing timeline. Recommended schedule:
  • Sophomore spring: Take the PSAT for practice
